The Navagio Boat is named after the world-famous Navagio Shipwreck, also known as the “Panagiotis,” lying on the remote coast of Agios Georgios in Zakynthos. On October 5, 1980, a Maritime Police patrol discovered the ship carrying an estimated 2,000 boxes of contraband cigarettes—worth about 30 million drachmas. Bad weather had forced the vessel to drift for three days between Kefalonia and Zakynthos before it finally ran aground here.
Before this legendary event, the beach was simply called Ai Giorgi, but today everyone knows it as “Navagio,” or “Shipwreck Beach.” Hidden beneath towering cliffs and reachable only by boat or air, it remains one of the island’s most unforgettable sights.
